MONTVILLE, NJ - The Montville ice hockey team put together perhaps their most complete game of the season on Saturday as they routed Whippany Park 8-0 on Senior Night at Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown. Nick Mangano, one of the Mustang’s senior leaders, led the way with a hat trick and a pair of assists while sophomore Danny Scheine tallied two goals and two assists.

The game got off to a slow start as both teams struggled to put the puck in the back of the net. The Mustangs finally broke the ice with 1:21 remaining in the first period when Mangano scored on the power play.

“It definitely helps to score right before the end of the period,” Mangano said. “I think it gave us a good amount of momentum.”

Montville’s momentum led to a second period surge as they scored five goals to turn a one-goal game into a blowout. Scheine scored 47 seconds into the period to make it 2-0 and Brendan Perretta added an unassisted goal just over two minutes later to blow things open. Mangano then scored the next two goals in the span of just 65 seconds at the 6:57 and 5:52 marks of the period. The player who started Montville’s rally put the finishing touches on it with 2:33 left in the period to extend the lead to six going into the third and final period.

“He [Mangano] has been coming on strong in the second half of the season,” Montville head coach Alex Beatrice said. “He’s been really dominant on the ice over the last four or five games and he’s really shown his senior leadership.”

The Mustangs now set their sights on the playoffs as they only have one regular season game remaining. Over the course of the season, they have put together one of the best resumes in the entire state as they now have a record of 13-2-4. After going unbeaten in their first 13 games, they will look to emulate that level of success as they enter the postseason in two weeks.

“Tonight showed that we’re coming together as a team at the right time,” Beatrice said. “This was a complete effort from our goalie to our defense to our forwards.”
