MONTVILLE, NJ - In a game where runs were hard to come by, a solo home run by Senior Jade Tungul was the difference maker in a 2-1 win over Mendham on Montville's senior day.
Prior to the game on Friday, May 8, Montville Coach John Immediato honored 7 seniors, 6 players and 1 Manager. Cayleigh Aslanian, Sammie Booth, Mary Kate Cochran, Rachel Inglesino, Christina Kaminskij, Sam Kaplan and Jade Tungul were each honored on the field with their parents.
Tungul had been hitless on the day, but one swing of the bat changed everything. It was a game dominated by talented pitching as Montville's Kristie Monaco and Mendham's Julia Buckley pitched strong outings for their teams. Buckley gave up and early run scored by Madison Hill who reached via a dropped 3rd strike. She stole second and a single advanced her to 3rd base. She would come around to score when Cayleigh Aslanian singled to give the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 lead. It would prove to be the only mistake Buckley would make until the 7th. She kept her team down 1-0 for the next 5 innings, but Montville pitcher Kristie Monaco was in a groove. Through 6 innings she had only allowed 4 hits as Montville led 1-0.
However, in the top of the 7th after Monaco retired the 1st 2 hitters, Mendham Shortstop Val Smith singled, followed by a single from Michelle Stanton. That would end the day for Monaco as she gave way to Senior Sammie Booth. With runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs Genny Madarasz doubled into the right-centerfield gap scoring Smith to tie the game at one. In the bottom of the 7th, Jade Tungul led off and crushed a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield fence to give the Lady Mustangs a 2-1 win.
Coach Immediato talked about the win securing the conference title with 1 game left and knew Mendham would give them a tough battle. He also thought this was by far "the best outing of the year" for Kristie Monaco. He praised the timely hit of Tungul's home run in the bottom of the 7th. He called her a clutch player and she was true to form with the clutch hit especially on her senior day. It was her second home run of the season and Immediato was happy but when the inning began he was just looking for her to find a way on base.
Senior 3rd baseman Jade Tungul was extremely excited knowing how good the feeling was to do this on senior day. It also made her feel good knowing they secured the conference championship. She said she was just looking for a ball to hit and that she approached it like any at-bat.
