JCP&L Customers Can Get $10,000 Rebate on Nissan LEAF Electric Cars

JCP&L President Jim Fakult, left, looks under the hood of a Nissan LEAF with Nissan World of Denville Sales Manager Nisarg Shah

MORRISTOWN, NJ – In an effort to promote electric vehicles, Jersey Central Power & Light, a TAPinto.net sponsor, has partnered with Nissan on a program that can save JCP&L customers $10,000 if they buy a Nissan LEAF all-electric car.

JCP&L customers just need to present their electric bill and a copy of an official program flyer when they visit a participating Nissan dealership, said JCP&L President Jim Fakult during a Thursday visit to Nissan World of Denville.

Those who buy a 2017 LEAF will not only get a $10,000 rebate from Nissan but might also qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit. Additionally, the New Jersey Sales and Use Tax Act provides a tax exemption for qualified zero-emission vehicles.

“I think it’s a tremendous offer,” said Fakult, standing next to a new Leaf outside the Route 10 dealership’s showroom. He said JCP&L gladly endorsed the idea when it was proposed by Nissan.

“We were like, `Absolutely!’” Fakult commented. “Our customers benefit and it puts a great product on the road.”

The $10,000 rebate offer expires Sept. 30 or when the participating dealers run out of cars. Nissan World of Denville, which had four LEAFs on hand, has ordered 10 more, said sales manager Nisarg Shah,

Shah said he commutes to work in a LEAF and loves the car. The vehicle goes more than 107 miles on a charge. Fakult said it should cost most JCP&L customers about $4 to fully charge a LEAF.

Further savings come from the fact that there are no belts, air filters, oil filters (and oil) gas filters, spark plugs and other internal combustion engine maintenance costs, noted Shah. He said the car’s battery is warrantied for eight years or 100,000 miles.

There are a number of ways to charge a LEAF including a 240-volt “normal charge” that takes about six hours, a DC quick charge from a fast-charge station that brings the battery to about 80 percent full in a half-hour and a 110-volt “opportunity charge” cable that takes about 12 hours. There are about 30.000 public charging stations across the country, according to Nissan.

LEAFs cost between $30,000 and $36,000, meaning the JCP&L-related rebate, combined with the tax credits, cuts the price by at least a third, noted JCP&L and Nissan representatives. Shah said there are similar discounts available for those who want to lease a LEAF.

Those interested in the offer can download the program flyer online from a website that also lists participating New Jersey dealerships.
