Lazar Students to stage “Fiddler on the Roof Junior,” April 22 and 23

Almost four dozen students comprise the cast and crew of Robert R. Lazar Middle School’s spring production, “Fiddler on the Roof Junior.” The six, seventh and eighth grade students will perform both on-stage and behind the scenes on Wednesday and Thursday, April 22 and 23, at 7:30 p.m. Performances will be held at Montville Township High School Dr. Robert O. MONTVILLE, NJ - Robert R. Lazar Middle School will present “Fiddler on the Roof Junior,” Wednesday and Thursday, April 22 and 23, at 7:30 p.m.

The classic American musical, with book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). 

“’Fiddler on the Roof Junior’ is a special adaptation of the classic Broadway musical, which tackles the universal theme of tradition in ways that reach across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion,” the MTI website explains.

A shortened script, “Fiddler on the Roof Junior” retains the famous Broadway storyline of a poor dairyman, Tevye, in pre-revolutionary Russia. Tevye’s goal is to protect is daughters and provide them with a sense of tradition in the face of a rapidly changing world. The production includes many of the show’s most recognizable musical numbers including: “Tradition,” “If I Were A Rich Man,” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”

Music teacherKathy Zajac, will direct. Zajac has been teaching in Montville Township Public Schools for 15 years and was honored in September with a pin commemorating her years of service.  “Fiddler on the Roof Junior” is the latest project in an exciting career of musical theatre direction for young performers. This spring’s production includes almost four dozen six, seven and eighth grade students performing both on-stage and behind the scenes. The co-director is Spanish teacher Jaime Novak.

The cast of “Fiddler on the Roof Junior” includes: Matt Krase, Julia Rossinow, Alexa Zammit, Jessica Blake, Veronica Tullo, Victoria Wei, Julia Festini, Ryan Dratler, Skyler Herman, Ganesh Arunachalam, Aditya Sharma, Sam Stiller, Saneil Shah, Griffin Smolar, Jack Iaci, Jalen Cyrus, Evan Testa, Ian Hagen, Ana Marie Popovska, Lexi Burns, Jadyn Silverberg, Meera Krishnan, Viktoria Popovska, Ashley Westergaard, Julia Quintino, Nina Lewin, Gabbi Casiano, Angelina Hahn, Julianne MacNeill, Claudia Colatrello, Taylor Smith, Verina Megala, Jacqueline MacStudy, Marcela Diaz, Maddy Kelly, Isabell Reed, Emma Zwiekel, Katie Roy, Emily Gazzilo, Abbi Iasso, Shubra Sood, Ashley Cosenza, Elise Ao, Maheebah Syed and David Piwowarski.

The stage crew includes: Gloriana Restaino, Max Katterman, Arianne Grevesen, Rachel Li, Ishah Tariq, Rachel Liebowitz, Jodi Justnes, Maria Papera, Nicholas Mastrangelo, Toniann Bednarz, Alyssa Payne, Elena McGovern, Gerry O’Donnell and Randi Wallenburg.

Performances of “Fiddler on the Roof Junior” will be held on Wednesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Montville Township High School Dr. Robert O. Stafford Auditorium, 100 Horseneck Road, Montville, New Jersey. Tickets are $7 and will be sold at the door. For advance ticket information, contact kathy.zajac@montville.net.
