MONTVILLE, NJ - Eagle Scout candidate Brandon Wong completed his first day of work on his Eagle project on May 2. Wong’s project involves improving the aesthetic of the 9/11 and Pan Am Flight 103 Memorial near the VFW building in Montville Community Park.
Wong consulted with Montville Township Department of Public Works Director John Perry, who recommended the project. The memorial, a circular, low wall with the words “Freedom, Faith, Strength, and Hope” inscribed on it has a planting circle in the center with a monument, but the plantings had died.
Wong and fellow scouts from Montville’s Boy Scouts Troop 74 moved the monument to the rim of the planting circle, dug up the bushes, and planted a Japanese maple tree and some periwinkle ground cover.
Phase two of the project will be the installation of a bench approximately 30 feet away on an existing concrete pad.
“The project went smoothly so far,” said Wong. “The hardest part of the project was moving the monument because it was extremely heavy.”
Wong is not sure when the bench will arrive so that it can be installed.
