MONTVILLE, NJ - The 2019 season is now two games old, and for the Montville football team, it's been as good of a start as possible- especially on defense.
Behind a big passing performance from quarterback Mike Burke as well as another strong defensive effort, Montville earned a 20-0 win over Kinnelon on Friday night at Kinnelon High School for the team's second straight shutout win to open the year.
Burke completed 10-of-13 passes for 232 yards and one touchdown. He scored the game's opening touchdown in the first quarter on a 1-yard TD plunge to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. The senior finished with 49 rushing yards on seven carries.
Colin Regan extended the lead in the second quarter with a 2-yard TD run, before he hauled in a 20-yard TD strike from Burke in the third quarter to cap the scoring.
Regan rushed seven times for 41 yards, and also caught six passes for 102 yards in the win. Reese Martinelli caught three passes for 94 yards, while Zach Walch carried 10 times for 77 yards.
Montville will look to move to 3-0 for the second consecutive year on Friday, when it hosts West Milford at 7 p.m.
