MONTVILLE, NJ – They might have performed last, but they came in first. The Montville Township High School Marching Band hosted the 11th annual Mustang Classic Band Festival and competition at the school on Oct. 24, and captured first place in the IIIA division. They also received awards for Best Percussion and Best Visual.

It was a cold and cloudy day but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the 16 bands and more than 1,200 student musicians and color guard members that competed.

Parsippany High School Marching Band played its program, “Cloud 9,” which included selections from “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen, “Learn to Fly” by the Foo Fighters, and “Karn Evil 9,” by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Montville Township High School’s program was called “Equilibrium,” and “is a story that explores the balance of life. Whether joyous and good, or solemn and hard, in the end it is the culmination of these experiences that make us who we are,” according to the show’s program. The movements of the original piece are: Light, Dark, Chaos and Equilibrium.

“The Mustang Classic is an important part of the MTHS Field Corps program,” said Director Ken Korlishin. “I am grateful for the hard work and support our parents and students devote to our marching band.  I am also proud of the dedication of this year’s team of musicians and color guard. MTHS placed first in their class at Vernon, Pequannock and Fair Lawn, and they captured Best Overall Effect, as well as other awards, at all three events.”

“Thank you for participating in and attending our event,” said event committee chair and band parent Kathleen Haft. “We hope everybody had a fun, safe and rewarding experience today. See you all next year for the twelfth annual Mustang Classic Band Festival!”

The MTHS Field Corps is under the direction of music teacher Ken Korlishin, and the student leadership of Drum Major Robin Lemmerz, Assistant Drum Major Kayla Westergaard, and Color Guard Captains Amy Zhu and Erin McGuire.
