DENVILLE, NJ - Good public speakers are hard to find, but Montville has one of the community’s finest. Ellen Oxild of Montville was the first place winner of Open Door Toastmasters’ Humorous Speech Contest, held at the Denville Community Church in Denville on Aug. 25. She will advance to the Area Contest on Sept. 27 to compete against three Toastmasters clubs from Morris and Sussex Counties –First of Sussex, Flanders @ 5, and Selective Leaders and Speakers. That winner will move on to the Division contest on Oct. 25.
Oxild’s speech, titled “Method of Murder,” reenacted encounters between humans and insects. “It’s a true story about a confrontation with huge cave crickets in a small space,” Oxild said. “The subject lends itself well to vocal variety and body language, so I focused on those skills to get the audience laughing.”
Oxild, a communications and design professional, has been a member of Open Door since 2012. She received her Competent Communicator and Leadership awards, and has served as Vice President of Public Relations.
Open Door Toastmasters is one of over 750 Toastmasters clubs in the tri-state area. Founded in 2004, the club has earned numerous awards and is recognized as one of the most distinguished clubs in New Jersey. Open Door currently has over 40 active members, representing a culturally diverse cross-section of the community, ranging in age from early 20s to late 70s. Professionals from all walks of life, including real estate, banking, technology, law, entrepreneurs, and journalists form the club, which meets twice each month.
“We are an all-volunteer community and welcome new members regularly,” says Armand Cucciniello III, vice president of public relations and former U.S. diplomat. “Our only prerequisites for membership are a willingness to learn, determination to succeed, and dedication to proactively supporting others as we all work to improve our public speaking and leadership capabilities.”
Open Door Toastmasters welcomes visitors at all of its meetings, which take place on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, at 7:00 p.m. at the Denville Community Church.
