Dear Montville Library Patrons:

The library wants to hear from you!

The Board of Trustees and library staff are working with Library Development Solutions, a consulting firm, to develop new strategic and technology plans for the library. These plans will serve as blueprints for service enhancements and improvements for the next several years, and will set the course for our future. Our goal is to implement these plans in order to ensure that the Montville Township Library continues to meet the evolving needs of our community.

Today, future planning for our library takes on a special urgency because the environment in which public libraries operate continues to undergo change. A large part of this change is the result of advances in technology, specifically the growth of digital content, from e-books to streaming media, and the ready public access to the Internet, especially through handheld devices, like smartphones.

Community needs and expectations are likewise shifting. Demographic changes, especially increases in immigration, require a range of responses from our library, including offering English Language Learning. More than ever, young families look to our library for help in developing their pre-school children, and for support as the children progress through the school years. We have also seen an increase in library use by Baby Boomers seeking  information to reinvent the idea of retirement or help with health issues for themselves or their aged parents.

Adults have a range of life-long learning needs. The current economic climate leads many adults to seek information and learning opportunities relating to education, careers, and job searches. Adults also want to improve their technology skills, both to remain viable in the workplace and to support their interests and hobbies. Our library also has a great opportunity to help stimulate economic development through providing work force readiness and support for local  small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, personal growth, pleasure from reading, creative inspiration, and entertainment, all continue to be strong drivers in our library’s use. But while many of the township’s residents make use of these valuable resources available to them, many do not. The question often asked is, “Why doesn’t everyone in the township use the library?”

As part of the strategic and technology planning process, the library will host a series of focus groups to gather input from community members and local leaders on the features they want and need from their library. The information gathered at these events will be combined with the data collected from the library’s community partners, trustees and staff to develop a mission and vision statement and to establish goals and multi-year objectives.

We invite you to attend one of the upcoming focus groups to help us form a plan and vision for the library’s next chapter.

  • Parents, Wed., Aug. 16 at 10 a.m.
  • Adults & Older Adults, Wed., Aug. 23 at 1 p.m.
  • Teens, Wed., Aug. 23 at 4 p.m.
  • Community Partners & Leaders, Wed., Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.

Each of the focus group meetings will run approximately an hour and a half. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited. Please register in advance by calling the library’s Information Desk at:  973-402-0900, ext. 227 or stop by the library and register on your next visit.

Following the forums, a short survey will be distributed throughout the township for additional feedback. If you cannot attend the forums, we hope that you take a few minutes to participate in this civic engagement process to assist the Library Board and staff in better transforming the library for the future. Surveys will be available online and in the library. Everyone is invited to complete one.

The Montville Township Public Library is one of the cornerstones of cultural and lifelong learning here in Montville Township, and this planning process is a great way to provide the residents with more efficient, effective and targeted services.

We are hopeful that you will help us in volunteering your time and will attend one of the forums.

Sincerely,
Allan M. Kleiman, MLS
Library Director
