MONTVILLE, NJ – Township Administrator Victor Canning announced the increase in tax levy with the Montville Township Committee’s passing of the 2020 budget during their May 12 meeting.

The increase in taxes will be 1.44%, or an increase of $30.13 to the average-assessed home in Montville, which is $529,610.

Canning said that almost $300,000 in cuts were made to the proposed budget without impacting the quality of services brought to residents.

“When you divide that increase by 12 months, that’s $2.51 per month,” Canning said. “It’s the third lowest tax increase seen in the township in about 20 years.”

Some of this year’s capital improvements include road resurfacing, road striping and associated drainage facility upgrades and repairs (catch basin repairs, curb repairs, hardware upgrades, etc), according to a release from township administration. It also includes funding for two phases of resurfacing portions of Taylortown Road with the help of two NJDOT municipal aid grants.

The budget includes the purchase of picnic tables, grills and benches for the new pavilion, replacing the amphitheater, and resurfacing the Community Park basketball court which includes the replacement of basketball standards. Almost half a million dollars will be spent from the open space fund, which was voted on at the March 24 township committee meeting (read about it here).

Usually in the summer, the township has the benefit of various improvements from a grant called Clean Communities. Part-time summer workers weed, pick up garbage, do some painting and the like, but this year the program was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, administration said, because the state wanted to make sure that gloves were saved for healthcare workers, and social distancing and stay-at-home orders required the cancellation.

The next Township Committee meeting will be May 26 via telephone.
