MONTVILLE, NJ - In front of a packed stadium on Homecoming Night, the Montville High School varsity football team recorded its first victory of the season on Friday against Vernon by a score of 28-27.
With 37 seconds left on the clock, Montville was down by seven points. Senior Anthony Fano connected on a 15-yard pass with Sean Manning to put the team down by 1 for the tie and 2 to win. The Mustangs went for the win with Graham Jespersen hitting Rick DeBiasi for the two-point conversion pass.
"Graham Jespersen had his best night as the quarterback for the Mustangs," Montville Head Coach Don Morgenroth said.
To secure the win, with 20 seconds left on the clock, Mustangs defense had to hold off Vernon for three plays with the final play being an incomplete pass in the end zone with the game clock at zero.
"Anthony Fano played a fabulous game on defense, special teams and offense," Morgenroth said.
Jespersen finished with 82 yards on nine carries and two touchdowns for Montville. Mustangs' Rich Harty also ran for a score and Anthony Trifari had a interception.
Montville (1-6) looks to start a winning streak when they play at High Point (0-7) on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
