MONTVILLE, NJ – When you’re talking about fireworks, Montville Township is pretty serious about its display. Residents and visitors come out in droves to view the 20 minute-long presentation that never disappoints. TAPinto Montville spoke to some families who were viewing from the soccer fields in the Community Park about their multi-generational, double-digit-year tradition viewings.
The Rieker family has been coming since 1987 to watch, grandfather Eric A. Rieker said. This year, his adult son, Eric Z. Rieker brought his wife, Cindy, and 2 1/2-year-old twins Sebastian and Zachariah to watch for the twins’ first time. They had purchased a bubble wand machine that was making the twins giggle and run around, although Sebastian had his eye on the zeppoles they had purchased at the carnival.
Four generations gathered together for their 18th year watching together in the Reid-Durso-Bessler family. They made a special trip back from their Washington, D.C. vacation to make it back in time to watch the fireworks, Charlene Durso told TAPinto Montville. Nicole Reid, Carol Bessler, Daniel Reid and sons Caleb, Joshua and Levi were joining Charlene to see the show.
The Garrett and Lopresti families were “just hanging,” playing soccer, kan jam (a Frisbee game), and having snacks, they said. This was their 13th year watching the fireworks together. Mayor Rich Conklin had announced at the prior township committee meeting that a “special guest” was going to help him count down the fireworks, and their guesses were “a Jonas brother,” and “Buddy Valastro,” but it turned out to be the mayor’s grandson, Eric.
The countdown began and the show opened with fireworks set to music by Whitney Houston (“America the Beautiful”), Tom Petty (“American Girl”), Brooks & Dunn (“Only in America”), Shawn Mendes (“There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back”), The Chainsmokers (Something Just Like This”) and the “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
There might have been a little traffic, but everyone left with a smile on their face. Have a great 4th of July from TAPinto Montville!
