RIVERDALE, NJ – The Provident Bank Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to Girl Scouts of New Jersey to fund supplemental training for the 40,000 adult volunteers who deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to girls across the state.

With this funding, the four Girl Scouts councils in New Jersey will innovate current training curricula by offering Girl Scout leaders seminars on dealing with interpersonal relations and special needs situations within troops. The grant will help increase access to information and specialized learning opportunities.

“The Provident Bank Foundation is pleased to offer this funding opportunity to Girl Scouts because we know how important their work is in shaping our future leaders,” said Jane A. Kurek, Executive Director of the Provident Bank Foundation. “With the range of challenges young girls today face, it is important that the adults who volunteer their time with Girl Scouts have the support they need to nurture girls’ potential.”

Kurek noted that Girl Scouts plays a prominent role in the lives of girls and, as a result, needs more adult volunteers, and more support and training for those volunteers to offer the best possible leadership experience for girls.

Over the next year, the four New Jersey Girl Scout councils will host an inaugural summit for volunteers from across the state, and provide hands-on, collaborative workshop sessions and presentations featuring guest speakers. Following the summit, additional training webinars will build on the summit experience, as well as extend training to new volunteers. Training will address such topics as inclusion, special needs, and conflict resolution.

“Our volunteers are amazing, and they need the tools and support to ensure that all girls are having the best Girl Scout experience possible,” said Betty Garger, Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey. “We serve all girls, including those with special needs. These curricula will offer tips and techniques to assist volunteers and enable Girl Scouts to continue to thrive as an inclusive organization.”

Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey, Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore, and Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey are all part of Girl Scouts of New Jersey. Girls entering kindergarten through grade 12 are welcome to join Girl Scouts. Adults over the age of 18 may apply to be a Girl Scout volunteer. To join or volunteer, visit www.girlscouts.org.
