MORRISTOWN, NJ - The winners of this years Readers' Choice Awards, sponsored by Morris/Essex Health & Life, have been announced. This year Morris County Park Commission was recognized in six of their respective categories: Horseback category, ice skating category, museum category, nature center category, hiking trail category and summer camp category.
“The Park Commission is incredibly proud to have multiple facilities and programs recognized in this year’s awards,” said Dave Helmer, Executive Director of Morris County Park Commission. “The Commission works hard to provide a dynamic system of diverse natural, cultural, and historic resources, as well as innovative educational and recreational opportunities, and we are thrilled the community recognizes that.”
The winner of the horseback category was Seaton Hackey Stables in Morristown. Seaton Hackney Stables is a 38 acre fenced property that offers riding lessons, pony programs, lessons, trail rides, special events, camps, birthday parties, and various equestrian activities. The 50-stall equestrian facility includes an indoor and outdoor barn, two large fenced riding rings, a dressage ring, a cross-country course with banks and water-jumps, large turn-out fields, and more.
The winner of the ice skating category was Mennan Sports Arena in Morristown. The arena is a three surface ice arena that hosts four local skating clubs, an adult hockey schedule, daily public skating sessions.
The winner of the museum category was Historic Speedwell. The museum showcases Morristown's role in the Industrial Revolution as well as capturing life in the early to mid-19th centruy. The museum offers guided tours, special events, school and youth programs, summer camps and exhibits.
The winner of the nature category was the Great Swamp in Chatham and Pyramid Mountain in Montville. The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Outdoor Education Center connects nature and civilization. The center offers two miles of flat trails, views of swamp, marsh, meadow, pond, forest habitats and wildlife. The center offers interactive and educational exhibits as well as summer camps, events, and school and youth programs. Pyramid Mountain offers rugged trails, fields, forests, rock outcropping and wetlands.
The winner of the hiking trails category was Pyramid Mountain and Patriots Path. Comprised of 55 miles of main trails and 35 mils of spur trail, Patriots’ Path is located on 291.9 acres throughout Morris County. The trail system welcomes hiking, biking, horseback-riding, canine companions, and more. It links to several federal, state, county, and municipal parks, as well as watershed lands, historic sites, and other landmarks within the county.
The winner of the summer camp category is the Great Swamp and Pyramid Mountain. The Great Swamp OEC and Pyramid Mountain NHA offer the ultimate nature experience for a variety of ages throughout the summer. Whether it’s exploring the trails, meeting live animals, playing fun games, canoeing, or making awesome crafts, this camp series offers something for everyone ages 2 through 14
