MONTVILLE, NJ – Feb. 16 marked the Chinese and Korean New Years, which are based off of the lunar calendar, so the Montville Township Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board, a group of teenagers who plan events for young people, decided to plan their own celebration event.
It was held on Saturday, Feb. 24, and featured stations where kids and adults alike could sample Asian snacks, candies and soda; make mini kites and paper lanterns; or take a photo with a photo board. Residents could also write “Happy New Year” in Chinese or learn how to play the Korean games jeki or yut.
“This is such a nice event,” said Afsheen Akibar, who brought her two sons. “I grew up in a small town and we didn’t have events like this.”
“These Teen Advisory Board events are run by the kids entirely,” said Young Adult/Community Services Librarian Jeff Cupo, who advises the group. “Next month we’re going to celebrate ‘Pi’ Day [March 14].”
