ROXBURY, NJ – Succasunna lawyer Heather Darling announced her candidacy for a seat on the Morris County freeholder board.

In a statement, the Republican said she is seeking nomination in the June primary election as the GOP candidate to fill a freeholder seat vacated by Hank Lyon.

“Although she is a businesswoman, not a politician, Heather Darling has been involved in Morris County politics for some time, having served as president of the Republican Club of Roxbury for four years and secretary of the club for the nine years prior,” said the statement. It also noted Darling served on the board of the Morris County Women’s Republican Club.

“I believe that the public has sent a clear message that they no longer want career politicians or those selected by the current candidates to further their own positions with a “yes” vote,” said Darling in the statement. “I intend to bring a fresh perspective to the freeholder board and am fully in touch with the issues within the county.”

Darling said she wants to bring “economic growth through business expansion and job growth” to the county and would do this by “supporting free enterprise and small business.”

Toward that end, Darling said she believes in “encouraging programs at County College of Morris and Morris County Vo-Tech, both in-house and through relationships with other New Jersey schools, that will provide a viable labor force for both small and large business in Morris County.”

She said one of the most common complaints of business owners in the county is the lack of qualified prospective employees.

Darling also said she, if elected, would “encourage municipalities to work cohesively to create a countywide map including preservation of open space with residential and economic expansion areas.”

Residential tax reduction will be another campaign plank, according to Darling’s statement. She said this would be accomplished “through expanding viable business in Morris County” through the creation of “planned business zones, rather than the random projects which have lead (sic) to the many empty hulking office buildings around the area.”

Darling also said programs for seniors, the disabled and veterans must be maintained and she said the county’s infrastructure – primarily its roads – “must be addressed with the proper attention and projects must be supervised to ensure quality results.”

Darling has served as vice-chair of the Roxbury Economic Development Committee, as a member of the Roxbury Zoning Board of Adjustment, Roxbury Environmental Commission and Roxbury Chamber of Commerce.

Darling contends her past career as a successful competitive bodybuilder demonstrates her “level of discipline and commitment.” Darling won the New Jersey State Bodybuilding Championships in 2002, 2005 and 2011, the NPC Suburban Bodybuilding Championships in 2002 and 2005 and the East Coast Bodybuilding Championships Heavy Weight class in 2009, according to the statement.
