MONTVILLE, NJ – Students taking Spanish and participating in the Robert R. Lazar Middle School Spanish Club are planning a iSomos Uno! (We are One!) bowling fundraiser on Sunday, May 20. They hope to help restore electricity and provide some relief for the Hurricane Maria survivors of Puerto Rico. The Spanish Language school students began planning the event in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. People of all ages are asked to attend the family bowling outing. The cost is only $10 cash for this family friendly fundraiser. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Hurricane Maria Relief Fund at HispanicFederation.org.
A category 4 storm, Hurricane Maria devastated the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017. With winds of over 175 miles per hour, Hurricane Maria left over 60 dead on the island of Puerto Rico, and millions more homeless and without power. More than 200,000 families and businesses are still without power. Hurricane Maria was the strongest storm to hit the U.S. territory in 89 years, according to the National Weather Service.
“My Spanish students have been planning a big bowling event,” said Lazar Spanish Teacher Jaime Novak. “They are raising funds to donate to Puerto Rico to help with the continued Hurricane Maria relief efforts.”
“They have been working so hard, all year,” noted Spanish Teacher and Spanish Club Advisor Maria D’Apolito.
Novak added, “We really hope the community of Montville and beyond will come out and help support the extraordinary efforts of these students for this important cause.”
In the seven months since Hurricane Maria left most of the 3.4 million U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico without power, water and shelter, progress to rebuild the America commonwealth has been slow.
In addition, many of those, who have had power restored, experience frequent outages. Because of the slow recovery and the loss of income due to the devastation, Puerto Ricans are also battling poverty, housing shortages and a growing mental health crisis.
The iSomos Uno! (We are One!) fundraiser will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Boonton Lanes, 720 Myrtle Avenue, Boonton, NJ 07005. The cost to attend the family fun event is only $10 cash. Everyone is invited. Admission is to be paid at the door.
