MONTVILLE, NJ – The Towaco Civic Association awarded scholarships to two graduated seniors at their June 15 meeting.
Ganesh Arunachalam and Anita Ng received $500 each.
Chairs George Manderioli and Georgianna Manderioli aided in choosing the pair.
“We could go on and on about these students,” Georgianna said. “Anita you are very practical, you think on your feet, you know how to feel good and proud, and you’re very confident. I think that’s wonderful.”
Ng talked about when she was dispatched as a Montville Township First Aid Squad cadet to a pediatric case in which the child had difficulty breathing. The child had to have an oxygen mask put on her, but was scared. Ng said she connected with the child regarding Darth Vader and his mask, which calmed the child.
George asked Arunachalam to talk about his preparation for the 2020 Science Olympiad.
“I’m part of Science Olympiad, and this year I was part of an event called ‘Mission Possible,’ in which we essentially built a Rube Goldberg device,” Arunachalam said. “Those are devices that set off chain reactions. Ours set off chemical and physics reactions. I had to create a small lever that would make a marble spin in any of four directions. I had difficulty, so I searched online and somehow found an anatomy article about joints like the one in your wrist – and I found a similar one in my X-box [video game] controller – so I took the joint out and put it in my Mission Possible device. I ended up winning 5th place.”
George said the pair had impressive credentials already, and he was sure there would be more accolades in the future. The Manderioli's wished the students good luck in their college careers.
