MONTVILLE, NJ – A box truck rear-ended a flatbed truck on Route 287 north Thursday, May 25, causing serious injuries to the box truck driver and backing up traffic in both directions for miles.
The accident occurred just before 4:30 p.m., according to NJ State Trooper Alejandro Goez, at mile marker 50.2, just north of the Brook Valley Road underpass. The box truck driver collided with a freight liner tractor pulling a flat bed, striking its rear, going off the road and striking the guard rail. Photographs on social media show the front of the box truck completely smashed in. Both Towaco and Montville Volunteer Fire Departments, plus the Montville Township First Aid Squad and the Pequannock Fire Department responded. Alex Gilmartin, age 26, of Glen Rock, NJ, had to be extricated from the box truck.
The driver’s injuries necessitated him being medevaced to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson. Both directions of 287 were shut down in order to land the helicopter.
The driver of the flatbed truck sustained minor injuries.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Trooper Goez stated that the right lane of 287 north had to be shut down during the active accident situation and subsequent cleanup until approximately 8:30 p.m.
