MONTVILLE, NJ – On Aug. 13, Montville Township administration posted on social media new speed limits that the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders had voted into effect at their July 25 meeting for Main Road-Route 202 in Montville Township.

The reaction, to say the least, has been confusion, with commenters joking that they may as well pre-pay for their speeding tickets now because they are very confused about the new rules.

The new speed limits may be in reaction to comments made at Montville’s April 7 special meeting, where Mayor Richard Conklin pointed out that when one travels towards Towaco center, the speed limit was 40, but if one traveled towards 287 on 202, the speed limit was 35.

These will be the new speed limits, effective immediately, according to the township’s Aug. 13 Facebook posting:

If one is driving from Boonton into Montville on Route 202/Main Road, the speed limit is 35 until you get to the first set of entrances onto Route 287 – the Valhalla Road side of the underpass.

Just before you go under the bridge/underpass, it increases to 40 miles per hour until you get to the underpass and traffic light at Whitehall Road. Then it decreases to 30 miles per hour going through Towaco center.

At the traffic light where 202/Main Road turns right, at the post office – the corner of Firehouse Road by the Towaco Volunteer Fire station – it increases to 40 miles per hour until you leave Towaco and enter Lincoln Park.

Change on Whitehall Road

The other change the county made was on Whitehall Road.

When you are driving on 202/Main Road from, for example, the police station, and you turn right at the traffic light onto Whitehall Road, the speed limit on Whitehall Road is now 30 miles per hour until you get to the intersection at the Towaco Volunteer Fire station.
