ROXBURY, NJ - Two Roxbury High School students were arrested Tuesday on multiple criminal charges after being taken into custody for a social media post in which they "implied acts of violence against the high school," police said.

Authorities were first alerted to the threats at about 1:43 p.m., said police, who said they "immediately launched a full investigation." They said two students, one 16 years old and the other 17 years old, were "taken into custody without incident."

The students were charged with making terroristic threats, causing false public alarm and cyber harassment and were placed in the Morris County Juvenile Detention Center, said police, noting the threats were made on the Snapchat social media platform.

“Our officers acted immediately to ensure the students and staff of the high school were safe," said Roxbury Police Chief Marc Palanchi in a statement. "Officers will be at the high school tomorrow only for added reassurance and support."

Palanchi said his department and the high school administration "will continue to closely monitor any threats made and continue to find the balance between addressing these threats and maintaining a calm environment for our students."

Situation Under Control

Roxbury Schools Superintendent Loretta Radulic, in a statement, also discussed the incident. "A high school student posted inappropriate comments through social media that created a cause for alarm and prompted the police to investigate," she said. "Please be assured that the situation is under control, and the student will not be on school property. The safety of our students and staff remains our first priority. You are being notified because there will be increased police presence in our schools."

A Roxbury High School student who saw the Snapchat post said it contained a photograph of a gun. The student who posted the photo added, 'I just can’t wait to get back from SPRING BREAK' according to the student who saw the post before it was removed.

Radulic, in her statement, thanked "the individuals who brought this concern to the proper authorities, supporting our belief to say something when you see something." She stressed that "action has been taken to ensure the safety of our students and staff" and said the school would not be releasing additional information because "the situation involves a minor."
