Upcoming Auditions for "Mothers and Sons" at the Barn Theatre in Montville


MONTVILLE, NJ - Auditions for the Barn Theatre’s production of the Terrence McNally drama “Mothers and Sons” will be held at The Barn on Sunday and Monday July 16 & 17 from 7pm to 10pm“Mothers and Sons” will be directed by Tom Schopper.

At turns funny and powerful, the play centers on Katherine Gerard, a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of Cal, her late son Andre's partner. Cal, however, is now married to Will, with whom he has a young son. Challenged to face how society has changed around her, generations collide as Katherine revisits the past and begins to see the life her son, Andre, might have led.

Written by acclaimed playwright Terrence McNally, “Mothers and Sons” was nominated for the 2014 Tony Award for Best Play and for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play (Tyne Daly).  “Mothers and Sons” is presented through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

Character breakdown:

  • Katherine Gerard: (60’s +) Andre's mother; wealthy and very self-assured; bitterly carrying a tremendous loss.
  • Cal Porter: (mid 40s to 50) Andre's former lover, now married to Will; a man with deep pain, but “reborn” due to his child and husband, more reserved than his husband, Will, but nonetheless passionate and personable; works in finance.
  • Will Ogden: (30s) Cal's husband; an early career writer; idealistic; more hopeful than Cal and very strong-willed and outspoken.
  • Bud Ogden-Porter: (6-10) a curious first grader with boundless energy and inquisitive nature (PLEASE NOTE: Bud is supposed to be 6 yrs old, but ideally we will audition older boys, up to age 10 or so, who might look smaller/younger than 10.)

Actors are asked to arrive to sign in within the first hour of the audition start time. All roles are available and casting is open; newcomers are especially welcomed! Crew and other volunteers are also needed for the event. If interested, please contact
