MONTVILLE, NJ – About 12,000 New Jersey residents were without power state-wide Sunday evening following a severe thunderstorm that slashed through the state, Mayor Frank Cooney reported.

About 5,800 residents were without power across the entire township after a lightning bolt hit an electric pole near Millers Lane. The pole caught fire in a stunning display of flames, likely causing the township outage, Cooney said. A brush fire was also ignited at the site. A tree fell down across Changebridge Road, as well.

Montville Fire Chief Jim Longobardi said the pole fire went out on its own after the circuit shorted.

Power was restored within four to five hours of the 6 p.m. storm.
