MONTVILLE, NJ - As of now, the Montville Township community is enjoying its last few weeks of summer. As bittersweet as it is though, there are other exciting things coming, especially for the 3,525 students returning to school on Sept. 5.
Among the new things that students will see this year, several renovations to all seven school buildings are taking place and will be done before classes are in session, according to District Communications Officer Sue Marinello.
The renovations were funded by a referendum that was approved by Montville Township voters in 2017. Hilldale, Valley View and Woodmont’s renovations began on the last day of the 2018-2019 academic year. Cedar Hill, William Mason, Lazar Middle School and Montville Township High School were renovated during the summer in 2018.
New media centers, restrooms, gymnasiums and HVAC systems are expected to be fully operational in all seven schools when the doors open on Sept. 5, 2019.
On another note, back in June, a new school district website was launched under the existing website address, www.montville.net, along with the implementation of the Schoology Learning Management System across all grade levels, Marinello said. This will enhance access to instructional information and resources, according to grade level expectations, and increase communication with students and parents.
Montville schools will also see many new and old initiatives being implemented, according to Marinello.
The first one is to develop and implement a plan to expand the district's Character Education initiatives, which encompass a targeted effort of developing good digital citizenship in township students. This also includes a component to provide parent information with regards to the negative impact of social media on students’ lives. Another initiative is the continuance of the integration of mindfulness into the school district's culture to address persistent high levels of stress and anxiety within the student body. This will help encourage more support between teachers and students.
In other news, township schools have been nationally recognized by Character.org, a coalition of non-profit organizations and advocacy groups that work to foster effective character education in schools from kindergarten to 12th grade. Cedar Hill, William Mason, Woodmont and Lazar have all been named National Schools of Character. The Montville Township Public Schools’ District has also been named a National District of Character.
On Aug. 26 and 27, new faculty and staff will begin the 2019-20 school year with a New Staff Orientation. This will be followed by Staff In-Service Days on Sept. 3 and 4.
There are also events coming up for students. For those becoming high school freshmen, and for those entering the 6th grade at Lazar, there will be New Student orientation events on Aug. 28. The MTHS event will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The Lazar event will be from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. for students who attended William Mason, Cedar Hill and Woodmont, and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for students who attended Hilldale, Valley View and are new to the school district.
Not to mention, Back to School Nights will be coming in September. For the elementary schools the date is on Sept. 19. For Lazar, the date is Sept. 26, and for the high school the date is Sept. 23.
