MONTVILLE, NJ - In recent months, the Montville Township Public Schools’ music program celebrated its final events at the elementary, middle and high school levels. These events included instrumental and choral concerts at the elementary schools, concerts by the Robert R. Lazar Middle School music program as well as its MTHS counterpart, a tour of Montville’s elementary schools by the MTHS music program, a concert by the Percussion Ensemble of MTHS and the Spring Recital and Induction hosted by Montville’s chapter of the national music honor society, Tri-M.

To recall just one of the many events that occurred in the last few months, the MTHS music program, specifically a smaller ensemble derived from the high school’s symphonic band as well as the orchestra, toured the five elementary schools in Montville: Valley View, William Mason, Cedar Hill, Woodmont, and Hilldale. Performing brief excerpts from their Spring Concert accompanied by short demonstrations/ introductions of the various instruments featured in the ensembles, the two groups, led by MTHS Band Director Ken Korlishin and MTHS Orchestra Director Andrew Havington, respectively, sought to promote the town’s nationally recognized music program.

Edward Fleischman, the school district's Supervisor of the Arts, commented to TAPinto Montville, “The main goal of having the high school band and orchestra tour the elementary schools is to generate as much excitement and enthusiasm as possible, so that most of our current 3rd grade students will sign up for instrumental instruction in grade 4.”

Havington, who also currently serves as the MTHS Tri-M Chapter 3756 Advisor, stated during the tour to the young audiences, “these students with me today, who have put years of work into music, all started out as beginners just like you.”

In concluding a highly successful and event-packed year of events, the Montville Township Public Schools’ music program ended their year with the Tri-M Music Honor Society Spring Recital and Induction Ceremony at Montville Township High School on June 12.

Featuring performances from musicians from the band, orchestra, and choir programs at the high school, the main event during the ceremony was the induction of additional members for the 2017-2018 year as well as the induction of officers to lead the honor society for the  2018-2019 school year. The newly inducted members are: Sofia Barragan, Sarah Bolen, Brian Chen, Jeffrey Chen, Michael Fichtenbaum, Jack Iaci, Evelyn Ko, Katherine Lebedev, Annabell Park, Logan Po, Joshua Phillip, Kiara Takagi, Elisabeth Tam, Haley Tam, Jesse Youngstein and Emma Zwickel.

The inducted officers of the Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter 3756 for the 2018-2019 school year are: Ted Park as President, Jason Joo as Vice President, Jane-Marie Lai as Treasurer, Anna Rehberg as Secretary, Gabriella Casiano as Historian and Dana Trombitas as Public Relations Officer.

With the 2017-2018 school year having concluded, the music program looks to the road ahead, with the following events currently planned for the 2018-2019 school year with more in the works:

  • October 24th: October Broadway Night
  • November 15th - 17th: The Fall Musical: James and the Giant Peach
  • December 5th: The Winter Concert
  • January 19th: The Tri-M Family Concert and Instrument Petting Zoo
  • February 28th - March 2nd: The Spring Musical: TBA
  • April: Music Department Trip to Hershey, PA
  • April Broadway Night (4/26)
  • May: One Act Festival (5/10 and 5/11)
  • Small Ensemble Spring Concert (5/20)
  • Large Ensemble Spring Concert (5/21)
  • June: Tri-M Recital and Induction Ceremony

“I was very proud of the accomplishments of the entire Montville township music program this past year! There were over 30 performances this year, both in and out of the district. Teachers and students both worked hard to put on some amazing performances," Fleischman said. "For next school year, I hope we have even more students participating in our elementary, middle and high school level ensembles. Participating in a music ensemble affords so many benefits to students academically, socially and emotionally.”
