MONTVILLE, NJ - At the height of summer, township residents flocked to the Community Park Amphitheater for the start of the 2019 Montville Township Concerts in the Park series.
Like how music lovers can experience the sounds of summer at the Park Lake Gazebo in Rockaway Township, or at Grace Lord Park and the Darress Theatre in Boonton, Montville residents can experience this venue of musical entertainment behind the high school and next door to the district library.
The concert series is organized by the Montville Parks & Recreation Department who has put together music shows in the district for over 20 years, every Tuesday, as an opportunity for local friends and families to gather and enjoy the outdoors with musical entertainment.
Kicking off this year’s concert series on July 9 was The Kootz, a classic rock band known for covering music across several decades, like Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Moody Blues, Little Feat, The Mavericks and Santana.
“We love Montville and the opportunity it gives us to perform,” said Glenn Taylor, who plays vocals, guitar and keyboards. “It’s one of the nicest venues for providing musical entertainment, so beautiful and serene. And many of our friends live around town here so we have a nice build-up of fans coming out for this concert.”
The Kootz are also known for having a rotating rooster of 20 members, changing their lineup between different shows. At the amphitheater that night, the four Kootz that took center stage included Glenn Taylor (vocals/guitar/keyboards), Rhonda Gringell (drums/vocals), Mike Garner (bass/vocals) and Russ Crapella (vocals/guitar).
The Kootz have been veteran performers of the concert series since 2003 and have become a favorite among frequent concert goers. Despite the heat and the pesky gnats, the crowd amounted to about 100 people, all bringing their lawn chairs and blankets and singing along to their favorite rock tunes.
“The greatest bands are here in Montville Township,” said Lin Sachtleben, who came all the way from Clifton to see The Kootz. “And The Kootz are the best of the best. They cover everything we love to listen to.”
Sachtleben has been coming to concerts by The Kootz at various venues for about six years, this was her first time at the amphitheater. She was joined by her husband Bill, who was equally enthusiastic in seeing The Kootz.
“It’s our first time here in Montville all because of The Kootz,” said Bill Sachtleben. “They’re an excellent band and we basically follow these guys, seeing them two or three times a week. And the music here at the amphitheater, we hear it has a great range and variety of music. It’s easy to get to and there’s shade over here from the boiling sun.”
The Recreation department and all of its volunteers can’t wait to see the music continue through the summer.
“I’m looking forward to another great line up for our residents to come out and enjoy with their friends and families this year,” said Lori Dent, recreation director. “A special thanks to Blue Foundry Bank for their generous donation and ongoing support towards our summer concert series.”
