MONTVILLE, NJ – In an unexpected vote at their regular Nov. 21 meeting, Christine Antal was elected Municipal Chair after long time Democratic activist and former Democratic Chair Dan Grant resigned as chair of the committee.
Grant proposed Antal to replace him, saying it was time to recognize the hard work of Christine and other newer people in the organization. Antal received the position after a unanimous vote by the committee.
Grant was elected vice chair for the term, which will last until reorganization with a newly elected Committee this June. Democratic party rules require that the chair and vice chair be either male /female or female/male.
Grant has been a part of the Montville Township and Morris County Democratic Committees since 1973 and is the only Democrat to have won five terms and served 15 years on the Governing Body of the otherwise Republican Township Committee.
Grant said, “Christine Antal, as well as Sarah Foye, who moved from vice chair to secretary, represent the newer generation of our party and their energy and dedication will serve us well as we approach the presidential, congressional and local elections in 2020 and beyond. Montville Township and the Montville Democratic Party have been my passion for over 45 years. I couldn't be happier with this transition. I will stand with them and remain a district leader but it is time for younger, newer people to lead us into the future.”
In addition, a new position was voted on, that of sergeant at arms, which was filled by District Leader Henry Bernstein.
