MONTVILLE, NJ – For Montville residents ready to fish, the bait was over as the Recreation Department hosted its annual fishing derby at Masar Park Pond on May 4. Kids and parents brought their rods and reels and wormed their way over to a spot on the shore to cast their line. The pond was stocked with a variety of fish including trout, catfish, blue gill and bass, according to a Recreation Dept. release.

Arya Goglia had her “got fish?” hat on and caught a largemouth bass. Her father Anthony said the fishing derby is a great contest.

“We moved to Montville about five years ago, and we come every year,” he said. “We read about it on the town’s website. There’s a good amount of fish and the organizations are so generous that you can have bagels and donuts.” The PBA and Police Explorers were serving bagels and orange juice and the Kiwanis Club was offering coffee and donuts.

A little further down the pond, Tim Chan caught an 8” sunfish. The fifth grader brought it over to the registration booth where Police Explorers Connor Olsson and Explorer Sergeant Mira Sapozhnikov measured the fish while Annabel Park and Michelle Georgescu from R.E.A.C.H. entered the kids’ names onto the charts.

His mom Kathy said that this was his first time fishing.

“My neighbor told us about the fishing derby,” she said. “He’s so happy. He’s caught two fish already.”

By the time the day was over, Tim had taken the prize for most fish caught, at seven.

There were no fish tales here either, with kids catching some large ones. Nick Brynczka caught a 16 1/2” largemouth bass, Will Ervey caught a 17½” bass, and prize-winner Angie Ervey landed a 21” catfish.
