MONTVILLE, NJ – The Towaco Civic Association awarded two $500 scholarships to MTHS seniors Alex Benno and Cameron Zurawlow at the June 8 Senior Awards night, and invited the students to their May 24 meeting so members could meet them.

The students were chosen from a total of 16 applicants, according to TCA Scholarship Committee Chair Laura Gerard.

Committee member Georgianna Manderioli said choosing wasn’t easy. “The students had formidable competition; everyone who applied had a lot of accomplishments and a great work ethic.”

Manderioli said Benno’s CV included the Montville Township High School forensics team, the National Honor Society and working with small children.

“Especially your passion for serving the Montville Township community as a Police Explorer and as a cadet on the Montville Township First Aid Squad, speak to your capacity for doing what the world needs, and it speaks to our hearts,” she said.

Benno will be taking EMT classes over the summer and attending Rutgers Newark in the fall, studying criminal justice.

Cameron Zurawlow was introduced by Scholarship Committee member Alan Guenzel, who agreed that choosing just two was difficult, but said the students gave him hope for the future.

“Some things we liked about Cameron’s résumé from the start – one was being a Wounded Warriors chapter founder at MTHS,” Guenzel said. “I personally thought that was incredible. Secondly was his outreach to the community through R.E.A.C.H. and the Homeless Bus.”

Guenzel said he was also impressed with Zurawlow’s commitment to his future kids, his obvious affection for his father, and his commitment to keep volunteering in Montville Township.

“That is the definition of a winner,” Guenzel said.

Zurawlow will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall, to study business.

The committee was composed of Gerard, Georgianna and George Manderioli, Guenzel, and Karen Cortellino.

Checks to VFW Post 5481

The TCA held a Pampered Chef fundraiser recently, and gave a check for $200 of the proceeds to VFW Post 5481, which former post commander Frank Warholic accepted on behalf of the post. The TCA also presented Warholic with a check for $75 for the post. A possible use for the funds, Warholic said, may be a World War I memorial.

Memorial Bench

Darlene Nielsen wanted to leave a remembrance of her cherished years in Towaco, so the TCA installed a bench and plaque at the playground at Camp Dawson. Paul Romeo and friends Peter Oppizzi, Patrick Oppizzi and Joe Mianecki performed the installation and were thanked at the meeting.

“It was a full-day project,” TCA President Kimberly Bott said. “Paul came to my house and pick up all the plants, had to mix the cement for the footing for the bench, got the mulch, … just so much work – more than I can say. We really wanted to thank you guys, you did a great job.”

Romeo’s mother Daria Senaldi surmised the project required 10 hours of work.

The plaque reads, “Towaco, what a wonderful town! 1973 – forever! John & Darlene Nielsen” and can be seen in the photo gallery.

Street Signs

The TCA shared with Montville Township in the expense of installing 27 new street signs in Towaco. The black sign posts with black signs and white lettering can be viewed in the photo gallery. More signs will be installed across the township at a later date.

Bicycle Decorating Contest

The TCA will be sponsoring a bicycle decorating contest on Saturday, June 24, at 24 Gathering Road in Pine Brook. This will be before the Montville Township 4th of July Parade. Kids 7 and under, or ages 8 to 11 years old can compete with bikes, wagons and scooters decorated patriotically. Prizes will be given in each age group: $100, $50 and $25. Adults are also invited to decorate their bikes and march in the parade with the group. Please RSVP for the contest to: annabel.pierce1@gmail.com .

Why Parenting is Harder for Parents of Teens

My husband forwarded an article to me, “The thing about raising teenagers that no one wants to say out loud.” (link below)  It hit me… hard… so hard that I felt compelled to share and expand on it.  If your family is struggling, you’ll definitely relate.  It’s all too true, and I experienced it, too.
