MONTVILLE, NJ – The Montville Township public schools Board of Education met on Jan. 2 to reorganize and named long-time board member Charles Grau as its new president in the wake of Matthew Kayne’s departure to join the Montville Township Committee. Kayne’s term ended Dec. 31 and he did not seek re-election.

Board Member Michael Palma was elected vice president of the board. Both positions are named via motions made within the board, which are then voted on by board members. Residents elect members to the board but do not elect the president or the vice president of the board.

Since Palma’s term had also ended and he ran for re-election successfully, he was re-sworn in and newly elected members Joseph Daughtry and Michelle Zuckerman were sworn in by Board Secretary and Business Administrator Katine Slunt. Both Daughtry and Zuckerman were surrounded by their families.

Daughtry told TAPinto Montville that he is very excited to start his work on the board and he was very happy to have the support of his friends and family that evening.

“It’s going to be a great 2018,” he said.

Zuckerman told TAPinto Montville, “I’m very excited to serve with this great group of people and most importantly to serve the wonderful community of Montville Township that I and my family hold near and dear to our hearts. I hope in my own way I can make a small difference by serving on the board.”

While concluding the evening’s meeting, Grau congratulated Palma, Daughtry and Zuckerman, and told Daughtry and Zuckerman that he “applauded them for sitting on the board and I think it’s something you will find very enjoyable.” He thanked the public for coming to the meeting and for their continued support for the fine educational programs in the district.

Grau joined the Montville Township Board of Education in 1979 and served until 1991, according to Superintendent of Schools René Rovtar. He was elected again to the board in 2006, which makes 2018 his 24th year serving the district. He served as board president during his first span of years on the board, for nine years, Rovtar wrote here.

Grau is a retired business administrator for the Kinnelon school district, he told TAPinto Montville, and he spent 22 years as an interim business administrator and superintendent in approximately 22 school districts.

The board decided to change the start times of open public meetings to 7:30 p.m., with closed sessions beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The board is still seeking to fill the vacancy left by the early resignation of member Carmela Novi. For more information, please see the Montville Township Public Schools website at: school.
