MONTVILLE, NJ – Superintendent of Schools René Rovtar informed the board and public of the progress on the board’s goals for the ’18-’19 school year at the June 18 board of education meeting.

The new school website is up and running and has buttons for each school, a change from the pulldowns that the old website had.

Regarding changing the Lazar Middle School schedule, in the first quarter of the year, Principal Michael Pasciuto had met with his committee to review the core questions to be considered with regard to the middle school schedule: electives; English and math time allocations and levels; basic skills instruction; participation in music programs; and special education programs. Site visits were conducted at Wayne, Warren Township, Parsippany and Bloomfield schools. English was scheduled back-to-back for this past school year, and a music (instruction) room was added. The final recommendations regarding any changes will be made during the fall of the 2019-2020 school year to enable proposed changes to be incorporated in the scheduling of students for 2020-2021, Rovtar wrote in the goals update.

As far as “the development of innovative proposals and strategies that will support student learning and increase achievement,” which was goal four, these discussions have occurred at the supervisory and staff level. Rovtar wrote that the criminology class had experiential learning and high school teacher James McManus’ history class had a D-Day obstacle course which involved problem solving and resilience, as examples.

Most staff members have implemented mindfulness measures in their classrooms at all grade levels, according to the goals update.
