MONTVILLE, NJ – Despite the influx of the Coronavirus, the many volunteers of the Montville Township Volunteer First Aid Squad are continuing to answer 911 calls and provide emergency ambulance coverage for the entire town. To accomplish this, our volunteers have had to adapt and improvise to the changing situation and our scarce resources. We’re asking for your help in the form of equipment donations and monetary donations so that we can continue to provide our emergency medical services for free as we are not tax funded.

Current Statistics:

In March, MTFAS answered 99 calls for emergency service. The Squad experienced a sharp increase in call volume in the second half of the month as 63 of those calls occurred between March 14 and March 31.

How We’ve Responded:

In response to the risk of Coronavirus contamination of our members, our members will be utilizing more protective equipment than usual, including nitrile gloves, surgical masks and respirators (N-95 and P100), goggles and disposable gowns.

We have also designated Ambulance #28 as our “Corona Rig” and outfitted it with extra protective equipment. We have also covered the cabinets of that unit with removable tarps to keep our equipment from being unnecessarily exposed and to make decontamination simple. Ambulance 28 will be first out on all COVID calls, but our other two ambulances have all of the necessary equipment should multiple patients with COVID-like symptoms need to be transported at once. Any ambulance or piece of equipment that is exposed to a patient with COVID-like symptoms is thoroughly decontaminated with the appropriate cleaning agents and with the use of germ-killing ultraviolet lights that the county has provided.

We are continuing to take calls as they come in and are responding to as many simultaneous calls as our staffing allows. We are in close contact with Morris County’s EMS coordinator and are following all other instructions being disseminated from the state.

How YOU can help:

Our EMTs are volunteers and our operation is NOT tax funded. The Montville Township First Aid Squad is a non-profit organization that relies on donations from residents to function and does not receive money from hospitals and does not bill patients. Any monetary donation is appreciated. Donation information is available at

Due to a national shortage, we have had extreme difficulty obtaining gloves, gowns, masks, disinfectant wipes, and N-95 respirators, and any donations are appreciated. While we currently have supplies, we are using them up quickly and do not have any anticipated means of replenishment. Donations will be accepted at our station, 137 Changebridge Road in Montville. Please put donated equipment in the red cooler next to our front door and NOT in the red clothing donation bins that are next to our ambulance bays.

If you are interested in joining the Squad, we are always looking for volunteers. We provide all training and are looking for drivers, future EMTs, assistant dispatchers, and other support. Please visit our website ( for more information on recruiting and donations.

As cases of Coronavirus continue to soar all over the county and state, we ask that you continue to heed the warnings and orders of state and local health officials and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Minimize all non-essential contact, stay at least six feet apart from others when you do have interactions, and wash your hands frequently and thoroughly for at least twenty seconds. If you experience symptoms that are non-emergency, we encourage you to utilize the state’s COVID-19 hotline at 1-800-962-1253. We also encourage you to contact the Atlantic Health hotline at 1-862-260-3199.
