MONTVILLE, NJ – Montville resident Sarah Renfer was sworn in as a New Jersey attorney Nov. 5 by Montville Township Municipal Court Judge Joseph Deming.
Renfer, a graduate of Montville Township High School class of 2011 and of the Florida International University Law School class of 2018, had been practicing in Miami for the past year. She had been litigating personal injury and insurance cases for plaintiffs, she told TAPinto Montville.
Coincidentally, Deming also graduated from Florida International University, but as an undergraduate, he said.
Renfer came back to the area this summer, she said.
“I wanted to move back to Montville to be closer to my family, mother and father,” she said.
Deming thanked the attorney and her family for the opportunity to participate in a small way in the celebration of her success in achieving the milestone.
“I was in the position you stand, over 41 years ago, responding to a judge who has long since departed, but I remember that day, as will you, for the rest of your life,” he told the group. “I hope and believe that you come to the profession with the greatest aspirations and intentions, and I applaud you for it.”
Usually judges swear in groups of attorneys directly after they finish their programs and pass the bar, but since Renfer had an unusual situation and the family was acquainted with Deming, they asked if he could perform the ceremony.
“It was an honor that he performed the ceremony,” Renfer said.
Deming told TAPinto Montville it was his first time swearing in an attorney, but 2019 has been a “banner year” for wedding ceremonies.
