WHIPPANY, NJ - Morris County Officials along with the Morris County Freeholder Board held a standing room only, open session last month where they discussed and sought input for their ten (10) year strategic plan.

Residents from throughout the county attended the meeting to provide input for what they thought should be the most important components of the plan.

Two of the most popular topics of discussion were transportation and infrastructure.  Many residents brought up traffic as a major problem in their municipalities.  Increased congestion on both Main streets and highways appeared to be a cross county concern.  Other topics brought to the session for discussion were affordable housing, homeless shelters (and the need for more of them), open space preservation, sharing of services and bike paths.

Many residents, including Mark Petersen of Parsippany, brought up the need to focus on the evolving future of transportation and what that landscape may look like 50 years from now.  He noted that his grandfather took a horse and buggy to the train station in Morris Plains every day and that he predicted the automotive industry would likely look completely different years from now.  Many residents brought up the need to incorporate the future trend of automobiles - and whether or not most people would even own them in the not so distant future.

Affordable Housing was a focal point especially since the courts are mandating such large numbers across municipalities within a short time frame.  Concerns that there will be a lot of wear from the increased number of inward moving families on existing school systems and the transportation infrastructure were echoed from several attendees.

Freeholder Christine Myers had this to say, "We are thrilled that so many members of our county came out this evening to offer their input and suggestions.  I could barely keep up with my note taking as there were so many insightful ideas and opinions being vocalized.  We can't thank the residents enough for taking the time to come to this planning session at the Library this evening".

Elected county officials in attendance were Sheriff Jim Gannon, County Clerk Ann Grossi, Freeholder Christine Myers, Freeholder Kathy DeFillippo and Freeholder Deborah Smith.
