The train originated from Gladstone and was running 30 minutes behind schedule due to the snow, according to train passenger Charles Vayada, who got on at the Millington station.

Vayada said, "We heard and felt a jolt at the Union Avenue crossing and saw pieces of the crossing gate flying through the air. We slowly came to a halt west of the Murray Hill station." Approximately 100 passengers were safely transferred to the rescue train.
