MONTVILLE, NJ – A man is confirmed dead after he ran in front of a tractor trailer early Thursday morning during a traffic stop by a Montville Township police officer on Route 80 in Montville, state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said.

Kevin Brian Cruz, 25, of Black River, N.Y. had a female passenger in the car at about 2:20 a.m. Aug. 22 when he was driving on Route 80 west in Montville. An unidentified Montville police officer conducted a traffic stop on the interstate, the attorney general said, and the officer asked Cruz to exit the car. The release did not say why police pulled the car over. Cruz ran into the roadway and was struck by a tractor trailer. The driver of the tractor trailer immediately stopped the truck.  Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Attorney General’s Shooting Response Task Force is conducting an investigation of the event, which caused backups on the road for hours.
