MONTVILLE, NJ - The eighth-seeded Montville girls basketball team pulled off a stunning upset on Thursday, as it used a big fourth quarter run to knock off top-seeded Old Tappan, 48-43, on the road in the North 1, Group 3 state quarterfinals at Old Tappan High School.
Montville trailed by seven at halftime, before chipping away at the deficit with a 13-10 third quarter to cut it to four. Then, in the fourth, the Mustangs took over by outscoring Old Tappan 15-5 to come away with the win.
Emma Wax led the way for Montville with 21 points and six rebounds. Dani Vito had 11 points, while Bella Vito had nine points and seven rebounds. Reese Henderson came up with three steals, while Dani Campbell had four blocks to lead the way defensively.
The win advances Montville to the semifinals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., where it will travel to face fourth-seeded Northern Highlands, which knocked off fifth-seeded Ramapo, 52-42 on Thursday night.
