MONTVILLE, NJ - The Montville boys soccer team continued its strong start to the 2020 season, as it played to a 1-1 draw with Delbarton, who is ranked No. 7 in New Jersey by NJ.com, at Montville Township High School on Tuesday.
Montville, who is ranked No. 15, struck early in the first half as Ian Kaiser headed in a free kick from Colin Hennigan. Delbarton responded late in the half, when Aidan Grant tied it up off a feed from Nate Zimmerman.
The teams battled through two overtime periods, but neither team was able to come up with the game-winner. Connor Ziolkowski made 11 saves, including a big save on a penalty kick midway through the second half to preserve the tie.
The result comes just one year after the two teams met in the Morris County Tournament final, which was a dramatic 3-2 win for Delbarton, who was ranked No. 1 in the state at the time. With county tournaments not being contested this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be the only meeting between these two squads.
Montville's record now stands at 3-0-2. It will host Parsippany Hills on Thursday at 4 p.m.
