MONTVILLE, NJ - The Montville girls basketball team has gotten off to an undefeated start, which has opened eyes around the state, and even earned a statewide No. 19 ranking in NJ.com's latest Top 20.
And on Monday night, it proved that it belonged there, as it pulled out a dramatic 54-48 overtime win over Watchung Hills, which was ranked No. 18 in the state, at Montville Township High School.
Bella Vito led the way offensively with 23 points, including four 3-pointers, to go along with six rebounds. Emma Wax added 13 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Grace Kowalski chipped in with 10 points.
Montville held a 25-16 advantage at halftime, but Watchung Hills came back, as it outscored the Mustangs 14-7 in the third quarter to close the gap, before forcing overtime in the fourth. Montville, however, outscored Watchung Hills 12-6 in the overtime period to seal the team's biggest win of the season to this point.
The win continued Montville's undefeated run to start the year, as it now stands at 6-0. It will face yet another stiff challenge on Wednesday when it hosts a perennial Morris County power in Chatham at 7 p.m.
