MADISON – They have walked a tightrope to get there, but FC Motown is going to play for the fourth tier of American soccer’s top prize.
David Nigro’s winner in the second session of extra-time propelled the locals to a 2-1 victory over FC Mulhouse Portland in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) semifinals on July 28. FC Motown will now play FC Miami 2 – winners of the sunshine conference – in the championship game on August 4, slated to be played at FC Motown’s home field at Drew University. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
To advance this far into the tournament, FC Motown had to navigate some close calls. In the regional final against the New York Cosmos B squad, the locals hopped out to a 3-0 lead but had to hold on for dear life after giving up a pair of goals in stoppage time.
In the conference finals a week earlier, they needed a 90th minute equalizer against West Chester United – a squad they had defeated twice in the regular season – to keep their dream alive.
The national championship will be played at Drew University, Saturday August 4 at 7:30pm.  Tickets will be available for $10 at the gate.  Anyone under 17 will be free.  Parking is free and will be located in the two front lots by Ranger Stadium.
