SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Thousands of area children will be relieved to hear that Bowcraft Amusement Park on Route 22 West in Scotch Plains will operate this fall and plans to re-open for the 2017 season. The amusement park operators sent a widely circulated email to their customer base to dispel the perception that Bowcraft's final days were imminent.

To Our Valued Customers,

There is much buzz in social media, Facebook &  Twitter, regarding Bowcraft. News of the park being sold and that the park is closing for good in the coming weeks.

These stories are not TRUE! Bowcraft is open for the remainder of the 2016 season, and will re-open for the 2017 Season in April of 2017. Also, the property is not sold. The property is owned by the same family since 1995.

We are also excited to partner with PANTOPHOBIA.COM to bring a new Halloween attraction this October. We will be having a Zombiescape Haunted Attraction, and a Pumpkin Express Train Ride.

Please visit http://www.pantophobia.com for more info & operating schedule.

Bowcraft  would like to thank all of our customers, and all the posts on Facebook. Especially those sharing their childhood memories here at Bowcraft. We look forward to creating more childhood memories to come!

Sincerely,
Bowcraft

However, the email did not mention the site plan that Bowcraft and ATA Developers had submitted to the Scotch Plains Zoning Board. The plan calls for the development of 200 housing units, 40 of which will be designated as affordable units in an effort to meet COAH (Council on Affordable Housing) requirements. The Zoning Board is scheduled to discuss the Bowcraft redevelopment plan at its next meeting on Monday, Sept. 26.

The fact that Bowcraft announced its intentions to operate this fall and open again in 2017 did not surprise Scotch Plains Building and Zoning Official Bob LaCosta.

"As with any major development, it could take a long time to get all of the final approvals they need," LaCosta said.

In addition to approval from the Scotch Plains Zoning Board, the plan will also require sign off from agencies, such as the state Department of Transportation (DOT) and the EPA. Those approvals could take months to secure.

Calls made by TAPintoSPF to Bowcraft this afternoon were unanswered.
