MORRISTOWN, NJ - On Sunday, Aug. 13th, raise a glass to celebrate National Prosecco Day.
Prosecco comes from the village of the same name, in a suburb of Trieste, Italy, while Champagne, also in the sparkling wine family, is produced in France.
The main grape in Prosecco is called Glera, and it dates back to Roman times. Prosecco can also be made with Perera, Bianchetta, and Verdiso, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. And not all Prosecco is bubbly; you can choose from sparkling (Spumante), semi-sparkling (Frizzante), or still (Tranquillo) wines.
In March 2017, Vinexpo CEO Guillaume Deglise said global sales of Prosecco will increase 36% over a five year period, surpassing 412 million bottles, or 34.4 million cases by 2020.
According to the IWSR findings, the United States will consume almost 4.2 million cases in 2020, up 19%, and behind only Italy’s 12.7 million cases and the UK’s 8.3 million cases.
