Jim Lonergan organized a private Chatham party for the soft opening of the Twin Elephant Brewing Company, which will officially call 13 Watchung Avenue home on Saturday, May 7 at 12 noon.
Owners Tim Besecker, Cynthia Deramaand Scott McLuskey are realizing a dream by bringing their backyard brewing to their Chatham establishment. Locals came out for the opening, sampling the six original brews with names like "Rugged Snuggle, Can I Kick It?, On the Off Chance, Diamond and Pearls, Shirmmy Ye and Juicy Busey."
The micro brews included an Indian Pale Ale, a Hoppy Saison, Red Kolsch Style, Red Ale, American Brown Porter and a Milk Stout. The alcohol content ranged from 5.3 percent to 7.5 percent.
"We've been home brewing for 10 years," Besecker said. "These beers will rotate and next weekend there will be different choices. Indian Pale Ale is the most popular style now."
Chathamites sampled the beers served up on trays with numbers under the glasses for identification.
"Some of them came from home brewing that we brewed for years and years and years," McLuskey said. "My favorite on tap is probably No. 2 Juicy Busey, a Hoppy Saison. Saison is a style of beer that developed in the Belgium speaking region of France. It's like a farmhouse ale that people used to make for people who were working on their farm. Ours is a variant.
"We watch market trends and listen to the customers and see what styles are popular."
Customers can purchase a 64 ounce growler of their favorite brew to take home.
Twin Elephant will be open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays; 12 noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 12 noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
