MORRISTOWN, NJ - Lena Mattero, a recent food and nutrition graduate from the College of Saint Elizabeth, received the Outstanding Dietetics Student Award from the New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (NJAND). This prestigious award is only given to one student, enrolled in a didactic program, in the state of New Jersey who demonstrates impressive leadership qualities. Mattero demonstrates these qualities in her position as president of CSE’s food and nutrition club and in her collaborations with local health professionals such as: BeWell Morristown, PureBare Florham Park and Country Fusion.

“At CSE, professors really push their students to be well rounded, not just book smart but to really be a professional [in the nutrition field],” says Mattero. However, her interest in studying nutrition is also deeply personal. “I was diagnosed with celiac disease,” says Mattero. “So that understanding of how food effects different disease drew me to learn how to help others through food.”

On top of her extensive involvement in clubs and local organizations, Mattero is in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, was nominated for the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges scholarship and received CSE’s Vincentian scholarship from 2014 through 2017.

“I would describe [Mattero] as an inclusive leader,” says Monica Luby, assistant food and nutrition professor. “She has a natural way of getting her fellow students involved in projects, she is well respected by departmental faculty and staff, and she has a passion for helping others.”

Mattero begins CSE’s two-year combined master’s degree in nutrition/dietetic internship in the fall.

“Together, we can accomplish a greater purpose and empower individuals of all backgrounds to live a healthy, balanced, and successful life,” says Mattero.
