MORRISTOWN, NJ- The Colonials continued their impressive early season play Thursday, by defeating Randolph 2-1. With the win, Morristown improved to 3-0-1 on their home turf this season.
What a turnaround by Morristown in 2019. Through 6 games a year ago, the Colonials were 0-6, and now sit a 4-2-1.
“We win together, and we lose together”, said coach Diego Salas. “I think the guys really bought into playing as a team and it shows on the field.”
Henry Acosta netted his team-high 5 th goal of the season to open the scoring in the 33 rd minute. A long- range shot was deflected in front of goal and trickled right into the feet of Acosta, who toe-poked it passed the keeper.
Fast forward to the 70 th minute, and still Morristown ahead 1-0, Acosta was fouled about 30 yards from goal. Connor Tierney delivered a sensational strike into the top right corner of the goal, leaving the keeper stranded.
“Goals don’t get more pretty than that,” said Salas. “This isn’t the first time he’s done something like that…he’s an unbelievable free kick taker.”
Fans from both sides were in awe of the strike, and it gave Morristown a healthy 2-0 lead, with 20 minutes to play. Five minutes later, the Colonials made their only mistake of the match, and Randolph was there to pounce. Morristown withstood a lot of pressure from the Rams late on, but were able to prevail.
“Tough games build character, but for us to be still undefeated at home, we’ll take it,” said Salas. With the loss, Randolph falls to 4-2-1 on the year.
The Colonials can improve upon that perfect home record on Saturday against Madison.
