MORRISTOWN, NJ - The world is filled with comfort foods we specifically select to lift our spirits. In 2015, grilled cheese continues to be the most popular comfort food in the world.  Therefore April 12 has been designated as National Grilled Cheese Day.

How can something so simple as bread, cheese, and butter have such an impact on society? Perhaps the Ancient Romans knew the secret since they were the first group of people to take the concept of putting cheese on bread and cooking it.

Many countries have taken the simple concept and expanded it. Germany’s version of grilled cheese includes 2 slices of French bread, butter, sauerkraut, cheddar cheese, onion, German sausage, and salt & pepper.

The Greek version of grilled cheese resembles more of a salad including 2 slices of French bread, cucumber, olives, cherry tomatoes, red onion, feta cheese, oregano, olive oil, and lemon juice.

America was introduced to the grilled cheese sandwich back in the 1920’s because it was a very inexpensive way to feed people. During the 1920’s, meat was a luxury that every American couldn’t afford.  Most households were able to afford bread and slices of cheese which quickly made the sandwich a favorite.

Almost 100 years later, grilled cheese can be found on many various restaurant menus as well as included in numerous lunchboxes across the country.
