MORRISTOWN, NJ - Reid Cappel has been on a mission to save his life. The Harding resident and Atlantic Health employee is in search of a kidney.

The journey began when Cappel was just 21 years old. Doctors found a tumor where one of the his kidneys should have been. The tumor wasn’t cancerous but he has been dealing with Chronic Kidney Disease since then.

“My other kidney is only working at 20%, so I have been on the transplant list awaiting a kidney," said Cappel.

In order to qualify for a kidney transplant, Cappel had to make sure he was in good health. He was told that he would have to lose 40 pounds. With Gastric Sleeve Surgery as well as supervised workouts at Full-Time Fitness, Cappel has lost a total of 72 pounds.

Matt Scarfo, owner of Full-Time Fitness has been working with Cappel to lose weight and achieve his fitness goals. In addition to working out with Scarfo, Cappel works with personal trainer Eric Reyelt on strength and conditioning.

Scarfo is not a stranger to charity work. In addition to his generosity towards Cappel, he also collects cell phones for soldiers, holds a coat drive for The Market Street Mission, and donates shoes for the homeless population.

"I’m happy to be in a position where I can make a contribution and give back to the community," said Scarfo.

While Cappel awaits his kidney transplant he works closely with Michele Dabal, Foundation Coordinator at The Sharing Network. The Sharing Network is an organization that works with people who are in need of organ and tissue donation. Dabal knows what Cappel is going through as she is an organ recipient herself. Fourteen years ago, Dabal stated that on April 19th, she received a liver transplant.

She is feeling great and added, “Anyone can donate. Tissue is the key. We need everyone’s help. There are 188 people in Morris County and over 4,000 people in New Jersey waiting for a transplant.”

You can help. Fill out or share the Living Donor Referral form HERE  to see if you are a match for Cappel or anyone waiting for a transplant. The Sharing Network will also have an Open House May 7th.
