How Dare You?

I want to start off by asking the question "How dare you?"  To the writers, reporters, social media junkies, and anybody else out there putting their own spin on the topics we face in our country today, how dare you?  You are in a position to educate and inspire, and instead you choose to cloud the minds of our citizens and enrage them.  Rather than reporting fact and truth, you choose a title that gets as many views as possible and a story that gets more "Likes" than your last garbage article.

How dare you dismiss strong leaders for their comments that are truthful simply because they do not fit in line with your agenda?

How dare you, to the elected leaders of this nation who choose to play off the ridiculous articles that are being written rather than putting it down and shaming those responsible for the lies?  So called leaders who choose to appease your voters for the sake of a vote, rather than to fight for those who have sworn to protect this nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic.  I can assure you, you are not who our forefathers had in mind as their successors when this Republic was established, and for that, you should be ashamed.

How dare you to the famous athletes, actors, and anybody else with the ability to motivate and encourage, not do so.  The world famous actor Morgan Freeman gave an amazing interview several years ago regarding his views on racism, yet I'm quite certain less than half of you reading this ever even watched it, again thank the media for that.  Must not have been worthy of going "viral".  How many of you reading this have ever heard of Jay Stalien?  I'm certain again less than half of you.  He is a black Police Officer from Florida who shared his views on what our nation is going through.  It's pretty eye opening, but I guess it doesn't fit the agenda of our media.

How dare you, all of you, any of you mention the names of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling as "victims" in the same breath as Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael J. Smith, Brent Thompson, and Patrick Zamarripa, the five Officers assassinated in Dallas?  There is a possibility that the incidents involving Castile and Sterling could have gone differently, but I don't know that and neither do any of you yet.  What I do know is that these five Officers were murdered in cold blood.  Oh, by the way, why isn't it bigger news that the Officers did in fact attempt life saving measures on Castile, and the Minnesota Governor was completely inaccurate in his statement?  I guess that's not good media.  I still haven't been able to find his apology online, maybe I should look harder I guess.

Does everybody remember "Hands up, don’t shoot"?  I certainly do, can't tell you how many times it's been said to me for no reason other than the person being ignorant.  I guess it's not good media that it was forensically proven to be an inaccurate account of what truly happened that day in Ferguson Missouri.

It's probably not good media to talk about how the Officers in Baltimore so far are faring pretty well in court and that those who charged them with murder don't really have a strong case.  Is it possible that those Officers, both black and white, were victims of a racially or politically motivated "drive by"?  I wonder if the media had anything to do with adding any fuel to and fanning that flame.

It's definitely not good media to really look into what Rudy Giuliani said about how the Black Lives Matter movement is inherently racist.  That coupled with the Washington Post's recent article about Officer involved shootings will really mess things up for the Facebook "Likes" and views about how Police Officers are targeting minorities.

If I were to walk around with a T-shirt reading "White Power", I probably wouldn't make it very far.  If I were to create a television station called White Entertainment Television, I would be called a racist.  If I hosted the White Music Awards, there would be protests.  Make no mistake about it, I have no desire to see any of that come to fruition, I'm just trying to prove a point.  I am against everything the KKK, Neo Nazis, New Black Panther Party, and any/every other group that speaks of "Supremacy" or believes they are superior to others.  In many groups, it's not actually spoken, but we all know what is inferred.  A baseball bat with the words "Black Power" at a peaceful protest about shootings nobody has facts about appears inherently racist to me, but I guess I'm taking that the wrong way.  We are one race, and that's human!!!

I'm not naive, there are some Cops out there who just shouldn't be cops.  There are also bad doctors who shouldn't be doctors, and bad carpenters who shouldn't be carpenters.  If you look at the numbers, out of the tens of millions of police encounters with the public annually, less than ten incidents on an annual basis, the cop is completely wrong in his or her actions and the result is somebody being killed.  That's pretty good numbers to me.  Can doctors, pro athletes, politicians, or anybody else say they perform to such a high, professional standard?

In case you haven't caught on, I am a Police Officer, and proud of it.  I refuse to accept this rhetoric being crammed down my throat any more.  I live and work in one of the most culturally diverse communities in the most densely populated state in this nation.  My entire adult life has been committed to service.  Service for my country in the Army, and service to my community and state as an Officer of the Law.  I have nearly 20 years of volunteering as a coach to the youth of my community and do not plan on stopping any time soon.  I am not alone in any of this, as I truly believe that I am the norm in policing.  In both my military and Law Enforcement careers, I have had the honor of meeting and serving with the finest men and women of all colors, religions, and backgrounds this world has to offer.  Simply meeting these people has molded me and enlightened me on how to be a fairly decent human.

Most of the critics have never lifted a finger to help, but will always have their hands out when we are there to give and be sure to tell us how we can do our jobs better.

I don't want a "thank you", I receive a paycheck.  I don't want an apology, I asked for this, hell I volunteered for this.  What I want is for our leaders to step up and do what is right.  Right for us as a nation, not for the popular vote.  Being a leader sometimes means being unpopular.  It means being brutally honest, fair, and just.

To the media outlets who choose to publish this, thank you.  If this offends you, you probably needed to be offended in order to open your eyes and your minds.

Respectfully,
Lloyd McNelly

Letter to the Editor: Police Presence is the Best Short-Term Solution

February 22, 2018

To the Editor,

There is only one short-term solution that can help protect our children right now. There needs to be a police officer in every school, every day from now on and in perpetuity.
