Idlewild Pool & Allegro School Students: Perfect Together
Allegro School students and their coaches have been visiting Idlewild Pool since the late spring. It is a little early in the summer season for most to sit by the pool, but these students did not come to relax on the sandy beach and take in the sunshine. They are hard at work!
Idlewild Pool has partnered with the team at The Allegro School to offer employment training opportunities. Through Allegro’s Community Based Instruction program, students learn skills that will transition them from school to adult life. Onsite jobs like the one at Idlewild Pool Club in Morris Plains prepares students for future job placements and activities. Students have been busy getting Idlewild ready for members and camps.
“After a long winter, the grounds of the pool require some TLC. Idlewild was very grateful to have the team at Allegro ready to help out. As soon as the weather starts to get nice, it’s all hands on deck preparing the pool for its members. The extra help was just what our pool needed to be ready to open on May 20!” says Idlewild Board member, Jennifer Aguayo. Jennifer and her family, are long time members of the pool. She also volunteers to ready the pool each spring.
The Allegro School is located in Cedar Knolls, NJ. Allegro is dedicated to teaching students age 3 to 21 years old using ABA curriculum and techniques. Allegro also offers services for adults who are on the Autism Spectrum. The highly trained and caring staff are eager to provide the most well rounded educational opportunities with critical individual learning. The Allegro School’s mission is maximize each individual's potential through a highly specialized, intensive and individualized education from which one can transition to less restrictive and inclusive settings, when appropriate, in order to enable our adults to function productively in the community.
Barbara Frankel, Transition Coordinator at The Allegro School, is very happy the students have the opportunity to “intern” at Idlewild Pool. “Our students practice “soft skills” such as interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, social skills, following schedules, taking direction from, and communicating with unfamiliar employers, mentors and coworkers. These challenges and interactions help prepare students for adult life.”
This is the first year that Idlewild Pool Club has been able to work with the students and staff at Allegro. Idlewild Pool is excited to be a part of the community that develops all types of learners and readies them for future endeavors.
