BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, NJ - Drivers planning to use Interstate 287 beginning Friday night should be aware their exit may not be available. Interchange improvement work will require the weekend closure and detour of Exit 22A, the I-287 northbound ramp to Route 202/206 southbound in Bedminster.
From 10 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8, until 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, contractor Midlantic Construction LLC is scheduled to close Exit 22A in order to prepare for the permanent relocation of the ramp traffic onto a new realigned structure as part of the I-287 /Route 202/Route 206 interchange improvements project. Motorists will be directed to use Exit 22B for the duration of the closure. The following detour will be in place:
I-287 northbound ramp to Route 202/206 southbound Detour:
- Motorists will be directed to take Exit 22B to Route 202/Route 206 northbound
- Motorists will need to stay right on Route 202/Route 206 northbound, and take the U-turn exit at River Road onto Route 202/Route 206 southbound
On Monday morning, motorists will be allowed to use the new realigned ramp from I‑287 northbound to Route 202/Route 206 southbound, once final preparations to open the new ramp are complete.
The $24.5 million federally funded interchange improvements project is intended to enhance safety and improve traffic operations between the existing I-287 interchanges with I-78 and Route 202/206. Two new bridges are being constructed over I-287, one over northbound lanes, and another over southbound lanes. The project is expected to be completed in late 2019.
Variable message signs in the area will provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvement project.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check the traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for news on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
